The Dialogue Series
“Mommy, where is daddy?”
“Well, he isn’t here anymore, honey.”
“So, where is he, mommy?”
“Daddy is somewhere else now.”
“Yes, but where is he?”
“I don’t know. He could be anywhere. He kind of just disappeared, didn’t he?”
“Can people just disappear? I made my nose disappear once. Is that the same thing.”
“Well, your nose was not actually gone, was it? Silly. I don’t think it is the same thing. He is really gone.”
“Is he in Brighton? I like Brighton. Can we go there, too, mommy?”
“We might, some day. Eat up, honey.”
“Will we see daddy then?”
“I don’t think so.”
“I miss him.”
“I know, honey. But he is gone, and he isn’t coming back.”
“Doesn’t he miss me? I miss him soooooo much.”
“He uuh, well, wherever he is, I am sure he misses you, too.”
“Doesn’t he miss you, mommy?”
“Well, I doubt that. Drink your milk, honey.”
“Is he not coming home?”
“I don’t think … you know … he is not. I’m sorry.”
“Did he leave because you had a fight again?”
“Oh honey, did you hear that?”
“He was screaming a lot.”
“He was, wasn’t he.”
“You screamed, too.”
“You were not supposed to hear that, hon. I am sorry you did.”
“You said he was hurting you.”
“He is not hurting me anymore, hon. He will never hurt me or you, again.”
“Did you hurt him?”
“I might have hurt him. Just a little.”
“Well, he might come back one day.”
“I wouldn’t count on it, honey.”
“Doesn’t he want anything back then?”
“What do you mean?”
“You know. Isn’t there anything he would want back?”
“Why … what … I am not sure I am following you, hon.”
“If I were him, I would want it back.”
“What is that?”
“Are you sure, mommy, that you don’t miss him?”
“Why do you think that? What does he want back and why do you think I must miss him?”
“I saw you still had his peepee in your drawer. So, you must miss him and I am sure he will want that back.”
“Ah … that. Well. Eat up, honey, your food is getting cold.”
